Decoden Mirror Compact

I have always loved to put Swarovski crystals on items such as phones, shoes, and other girly items, but I was introduced to the fabulous world of a Japanese form of adorning items called Decoden (also commonly spelled Dekoden and Deco den) from my sister-in-law, Sarah, and I have been unable to stop since.

My friend Stephanie wanted a Deco mirror compact in a blue and purple color scheme.  The mirror was picked up for FREE at Sephora with the purchase of a $10.00 or more giftcard.

Here is how it’s made!

First you want to gather your supplies.  You will need:

  1. A mirror compact
  2. Pearls, crystals, and cabochons.  Anything you want to put to make your compact yours and unique and beautiful!  It really is worth you effort, however, to use Swarovski Crystals if you can afford it.  It will take your project to that next level and add that special element of jewelry and make it worth something.  Plus, it *SPARKLES* so much more!! <3
  3. Glue.  For this compact, I used a five-minute Epoxy glue that was purchased at Michael’s Craft Store.
  4. A variety of the following:  Q-tips with a small cup of water, toothpicks, craft wooden sticks, and a wax pick up stick tool to pick up gems.  Wax sticks are usually little tooth picks or a different type of stick with dental wax placed over it.  I buy mine from online crystal dealers.

For this project, I used Q-tips dipped in water to pick up gems and pearls.  Wax sticks work better, but I have misplaced mine at the moment.  🙂

An important note about the Epoxy: I like to work with it in a room with a window open and wearing gloves.  It’s always imporant to be safe when working with any kind of a chemical, and you don’t want to breathe in the vapors too much.  Also, make sure you use little bits of the glue at a time.  It really does dry in five minutes, so you want to make small piles of it and mix that.  I know they sell 30 minute Epoxy, but I haven’t been lucky in finding that, and the one I did find had VERY harsh chemicals, so I didn’t want to be around that.

For a nice finished look, start out by outlining your compact border with a variety of pearls and gems.

I was quite lucky that a friend of mine used to have a jewelry business and had lots of unique, larger Swarovski pieces and other cabochons.  I used those on the ends and some throughout.

After you are done with the border, the fun begins!  Place your other cabochons and items in a fun pattern, applying the Epoxy glue as needed and then the gems.

The small blue rose in the upper left area I made using resin clay from a mold and then painted afterwards.  I will do tutorials on how to make these in another post.

Continue placing your items until you are done.

The larger circular pieces came from my friend’s collection.  I BELIEVE they are Swarovski, but I could be wrong.

The large purple square crystal and the smaller matching crysal on the right came from a pair of Forever 21 earrings!  Always think outside the box when you buy your pieces!! 🙂

Now you will have a beautiful compact to look at your feminine-self!!

The key to remember is to place things in randomly so it doesn’t look too orderly.  You want it to be a fun collage.

I love this rose because it reminds me of roses in anime, like in “Revolutionary Girl Utena,” one of my most favorite animes!  I knew I had to get these when I saw them.

The large crystal on the left was purchased at the local bead shoppe, but you can find them online.  Don’t be afraid to use beads or crystals with holes on them.  I simply placed a small crystal over the hole so you won’t see it anymore.

I made the heart in the upper right-hand corner with resin clay as well, painted it with acrylic paint, and then placed Swarovskis all over it.  I wanted a different type of look, so I then covered it with some epoxy glue.

Do you have any pieces you have covered in Crystals or Decodened?  Please send me your pics for a gallery from my viewers!

Welcome to Bombshell Lolita!

Welcome to Bombshell Lolita, a blog to inspire creativity, fashion, beauty, body, and all things feminine. Bombshell Lolita will do tutorials on decodening and crystallizing items, makeup techniques, fashion looks, sewing, and other topics such as organizing, health, and making your life more beautiful.

I decided to create Bombshell Lolita because I wanted a place to funnel creativity, hopefully while encouraging others to try things they may not have ever tried before, and I myself learning new things from you guys, my readers!

I picked the name Bombshell Lolita because it is two very distinct female forms, yet they are both similar in many aspects. My personal style is an amalgamation, meaning I love a little bit of every type of everything and love to piece different looks together or do certain looks one day and others another. I think that many people are like that, too, and it is so fun to experiment and create.

I hope you enjoy!
